Autism & ADHD Support in Gateshead
In Gateshead, partners have told us that there are gaps in post-diagnostic support for autistic individuals and those with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), gaps which create barriers to health and social care, and wider wellbeing.
The aim of this research was to understand the lived experiences of post-diagnostic support for adults aged 18-24 and those aged 50 and over in Gateshead who have received a diagnosis of autism and/or ADHD. Our goal was to explore what support individuals received following diagnosis, what barriers they encountered and what improvements they believe are needed to strengthen services locally.
Overall, the findings demonstrate that diagnosis alone does not lead to consistent or meaningful post-diagnostic support. Healthwatch Gateshead recommend local partners establish a clear post-diagnostic support pathway.
